How do I work?
I work in both an integrative and holistic way. This means that I combine key therapeutic approaches to provide the best fit for the person I'm working with. It also means I consider the whole person when working therapeutically, and not just the 'issue'.
The key approaches I call upon are the psychodynamic analytic approach, attachment-based and body psychotherapy approaches, and trauma-informed.
My initial training was in the psychodynamic approach where the emphasis is on providing a secure and safe environment in which to explore both conscious and unconscious feelings, with an emphasis on understanding how past experiences are shaping and influencing your relationships in the present.
My work is also influenced by the work of body psychotherapy and mindfulness where attention is paid to the whole person and how experiences and feelings are felt both emotionally and physically.
Another key influence in my work is attachment-based therapy. This is where difficulties in adult relationships can be understood by reflecting on the influence of ‘attachment patterns’ developed in childhood, and the nature of the bonds we made with our early care-givers.
I have additional training in EMDR therapy, which is acknowledged as an effective treatment for trauma by both NICE (National Institute for Health & Care Excellence) and WHO (World Health Organisation), and which is also an effective therapy for a wide range of issues, including bereavement and phobias.
I am also interested in the use of metaphor, narratives and stories in therapy. Stories can be an important part of therapy, especially the essential story of how we understand our own intergenerational narrative. We all have a story, perhaps many stories, that have helped us at some point to make sense of our lives and the experiences we’ve had. I am open to working with people who would like to use basic art materials, journal writing, or creative writing exercises to further their self-knowledge.
In addition, I maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the latest theories and research in counselling practice from my work with Brighton Therapy Partnership - the leading training provider for counsellors and therapists in the South East. I apply my continued learning to the work I do with everyone I work with.
